Nice

You know, its amazing how much difference just watching what you eat can do.  I haven’t really gotten much exercise yet :(  but have just watched what I have eaten.  In the last 12 days I have already lost 4 pounds.  Not to bad for just avoiding cheeseburgers and beer.

Don’t get me wrong, I am getting exercise, but not in the typical sense of the word.  Just carrying my son around the house can be a lot of work.  Only taken him for a walk once, even though I wanted to do that every other day.  Also wanted to walk the Mackinaw Bridge on Labor day, but just didn’t get a chance to do it.  I was in the area, but wife was feeling sick, so we didn’t do it.  That is also why you haven’t seen any posts from my wife.  She has been ill since just after starting this, so she really isn’t involved.  But hopefully she will be able to start soon.

Soup

Okay, so we came up with a great idea the other day. Soup is always better when you make it yourself (not to mention better for you using fresh ingredients). But it can be a lot of work to make a couple bowls. And if you make a lot, and freeze the leftovers, then you end up throwing them away when the freezer is full of other leftovers (at least we did).

So we came up with an idea. Instead of making 1 pot (like 5 quarts or so), we make up 4 different types. A vegetable beef, chicken, etc… Then, we get some small Tupperware type containers (those disposable ones are about perfect size). You fill up a few of them with each of the different types of soup. Then freeze the excess (you can actually freeze it in “portion” sizes.. we put 2 portions to a bag so when we thaw one, we both get a bowl). The Tupperware containers then go in the fridge. So now, when your looking for a warm snack, instead of grabbing a hot pocket, you can grab a serving of soup. Only takes a minute to warm up, and tastes a lot better also.

wow

Okay, I know its been a while. This “should” be day 9 already. But due to some unforeseen things coming up (like having to go out of town a few days, and more stuff for work then expected), we have decided to start over. We have been watching out diets, but haven’t really had much chance to get in exercise.

I guess thats not entirely true. I did have to move a bunch of 30-50 pound bins up a flight of stairs yesterday, and more today. Also, at work, I don’t use the elevator. Just walking up those stairs can tend to be a workout right now.. That just shows how out of shape I am.

The most important thing though, is not to give up. Just cause we are getting a late start, we are still going through with it. Too often, people miss a couple days, and thats the end of it. Instead, we will just start from a new date.

Hello World

Okay, so I guess I should finally make my first post. Even though this started a few days ago. By the time I actually got it set up, I haven’t really had any time to say anything. That is part of the problem. We seem to be busy all the time, yet never do anything physically active. It is always sorting things to sell on ebay, or setting up the train tracks for my son.

Okay so the “weigh in”:

  • Height: 5 foot 7 inch
  • Weight: 148 pounds
  • BMI: 23
  • Body Fat: 20%

As I said, I’m not “fat” per say. I’m just out of shape. This is on the high end of the “normal acceptable range.” I really don’t care about what is acceptable, and what isn’t. I just wanted a way to check my progress.

The “challenge”

You always here about “90 days” for getting fit.  P90-X is a 90 day workout.  EAS Body for Life is a 90 day challenge.  I am sure there are others also.

We have decided to have their own little challenge.  We are not using some store bought exercise routine.  We are not trying to win a prize by doing a structured workout and using performance enhancing products.  We are simply trying to get more health.  Since our son was born (over 3 years ago), we have let ourselves go.  We don’t have the strength or stamina we used to have.  We don’t have the bodies either.

So now its time to stop smoking, start exercising, and eating better.  Here is where we will record our progress.  We decided to do it online, because it will help to motivate us.  If I tell my wife I got a double cheese burger and didn’t work out, its a little embarrassing.  But if I have to tell the world..  well I really wouldn’t want to admit it.  So I’ll just skip the burger and get the exercise, and it will help more in the long run.
